Chris in China & Germany 肖克在中国和肖克在德国 [xiāo kè zài zhōngguó hé xiāo kè zài déguó]
the following travelogues tell what's really been going on in China from August 2007 to August 2008:I have been spending 366 days with my girlfriend 王梓[Wáng,Zǐ], been an intern, a translator and a student in Beijing 北京 Peking. Although I've been back in Germany 德国 since August 21st and I am not in the cosmopolitan city 北京 Beijing anymore this blog is going to be continued...telling things I (will) have experienced in Chemnitz 开姆尼茨/克姆尼茨, Munich 慕尼黑, Cologne 克隆/科隆 and Berlin 柏林
This Blog post is dedicated to the people who recommended the series House M.D. to me. But first of all I need to make sure that you at least halfway get my point of view and understand why I have chosen this headline for my post.
SMS is actually an acronym for Short Message Service, but today it also represents the first letters of three of my friends. In Chinese that acronym does not work so I just translated that idea of sending a text message to Mr. Gregory House M.D. 给豪斯医生发"短信". The word for short message is 短信 [duǎn xìn] and stands for "short" {duan} and "letter" {xin}. The people in Germany still call a cell phone text message "SMS". We use the whole Service abbreviation, but there I ain't tell you something new since we {the Germans} have this false friend {in linguistic/translational sense} "Handy" in our active vocabulary and we use that word instead of Mobile Phone because a cell phone is really handy, isn't it? Chinese people call it 手机 [shǒu jī] hand/machine. It seems to me that it is quite obvious why they use that term. Nowadays a cell phone is just as big as a hand, sometimes even smaller and it is a useful machine. But I do not want to make you fall asleep by boring linguistics, yet logical analysis.Let's come to more interesting facts and figures and especially wonderful people that have somethng to do with my headline:
One of them was born on todays Tuesday (2009-March-22 exactly 26 years ago). I need to explain: Only in 1983 the date March 22nd was a Tuesday, nevertheless I think it matches the time of the Series "Dr. House" in Germany {House M.D. in German} so perfectly that I wanted to keep it that way. So hereby I wish you a happy Birthday Ms. Maria M. or lets say a happy belated birthday: May all your dreams come true!! The three people who told me I should watch House M.D. or just that they are a fan of House M.D. and its Actor Hugh Laurie could not be more different from each other:
The just mentioned Maria M. works as Ergotherapist/occupational Therapist. So she is in my opinion a Doctor herself and knows how to treat patients. I guess she is treating her patients much more warmly and less cynical than Gregory House M.D. could or would. The other two people are just big fans without any medical job background. One man and one women. One woman who is famous for her wonderful and kind way of communicating with her students is from New Jersey and interestingly she and the third person are only related by one significant date: 2005-July-21 {Thursday}. It isthe birthday of two people who are and have been of inestimable value for me her Students and for his dad/mother. Her names are Sandra Price and Nico H. Nico H. was born on July 21st in 2005 when some of Sandra's Fans/students celebrated the first gig of the band "borderline" {Diana & Falk, Susanne, Felix, Johannes} in my Garden. Nico is the son of my handball coach Sven H. And Sven just said the following which is the same in German and in English: "Hey House is cool!!!"
Finally to the people who should have an appointment with House M.D. and his team. {By the way one of the members of House's team became famous for his part in "Dead Poets Society": Neil Perry alias Robert Sean Leonard alias James Wilson. The people who should have an appointment with House are mentioned in the video showing the wonderful cabaret artist Mr.Volker Pispers.}
And here are my suggestions for finding the final diagnosis (of course everything has become chronic and somehow incurable): collaboration, maladministration/mismanagement, dishonesty, *consultantitis* and the final enlightenment (this enlightenment took place 4 years before the financial crisis; in 2004 just check the date of the video again} by the stand up comedian Volker Pispers in his cabaret programme: "Berufsgruppen die diese Welt nicht braucht- occupation groups which are not needed in this World". Actually we should have known what is going to happen and has been happening long time before that financial crisis.
and here is my translation 翻译/口译 Übersetzung/Interpretation of things Mr.Volker Pispers said in the youtube video during his Cabaret programme "Bis Neulich":
I am not quoting him, I am just translating and interpreting his words. Therefore I use these symbols °°° to make sure that these unfortunately clairvoyant thoughts have not been mentioned by me, but by him !!!
~~the first 60 seconds~~
°°° There are freeloaders/spongers in this country {he refers to Germany}, parasites that live off our resources and only waste money of other people.
And I will immediately tell you who they are.Those investment bankers for example: Taking other people's money for a walk. This is what they do. Especially bankers who manage and organize an amalgamation/merger of two companys.
In retrospect 97 % of all the mergers of big companies are rather disadvantageous for the two firms having taken part in the amalgamation. After the merger the companies' net worth and the companies' capitalized value have always been less valuable then before the merger. The only ones who have been making profit on those mergers are the bankers who have organized the merger, because a banker is not paid according to the success of the merger. Perish the thought!! The Bankers get their commision according to the worth/value/volume of the merger at the moment of merging. Bankers paid according to Success. Are you insane!!??
Then you could also start paying Management Consultants according to their success. Well then all hell would have broken loose here in Germany!! Compared to that the Monday Demonstrations {a demonstration which is organized to show what is wrong in our state concerning unemployment in our "social market economy" and problems related to that} would be a mild breeze!! They, the Management Consultants, would be many more people on the streets than those during the Monday Demonstrations. Management Consultants belong to the fastest growing group in Germany!! Hardly anyone is still working, but 24/7 consultations are taking place. We are the champions regarding consulting and giving financial advice!! °°°
~~the second 60 seconds~~ ...to be continued... ...未完 待续 [wèiwán dàixù]... ...wird fortgesetzt...
Grazie is not only my favorite word, it is also the last word what you can hear when you are watching the last seconds of "The International". I consider this movie to be one of the best movies I have seen recently. Usually I go to cinema to see something less realistic, to escape the real world, to see things that seem to be unreal, however I had to see the most realistic movie ever and hey I would recommend that movie to anyone who still believes that our opaque and way too intransparent financial system does work somehow in any way. Moreover I wonder why the brilliant Mr. Tom Tykwer was not stopped filming that movie. Grazie Mr. Tykwer, not only for "The International" but also for "Run Lola Run".
The "truth hurts", nevertheless we have to realize that fact and do something "to make it all okay":
James Morrison and Nelly Furtado cannot play on "Broken Strings", I for myself cannot even play on a not damaged six string; now it should be the question for all of us: Can we afford to play on an economic playground that has neither been mended nor reformed since the concept of a free market has been established.
Relationships need change and improvement. A team during a football, a soccer or a handball match etc. needs different tactics for new constellation that occur while the match takes place. Why should our economy should not need different tactics and ways to figure out to do things else way.
After this short stop at my very recent past (2009-March-08, Sunday) I would like to jump back to the time in Beijing (2007-Aug-21 to 2008-Aug-21) and say thank you 谢谢 to some of the best people I have ever met:
here is a list of only some of my Classmates and friends in Beijing
申沅抖Shen Yuan Dou alias Shin Won Do 朴 贤 镇 Piao Xian Zhen alias Kelly 黎 秋 玄 Li Qiu Xuan alias Hana (Vietnamese- official Name: Le Thu Huyen) 李 在 浩 Li Zai Hao JaeHo 山 田 博 之 Shan Tian Bo Zhi "Hiro" ( Japanese- official Name: Yamada Hiroyuki) 金忠铉 Jin Zhong Xuan 孙守 赫 Sun Shou He alias Soo Hyuk 奥德 Ao De (Aedo his official name in Mongolia) Gao You Ji alias Go Yuhee 林慧仁 Lin Hui Ren 催净喆 Cui Jing Zhe alias Choi Jung Chull 恩巴格 En Ba Ge alias Naranbaotor 裴韩龙 Pei Han Long alias Bae Han-Yong 安德烈 an de lie alias Andrey 熊猫 xiong mao alias Daniel 高 思 英 gao si ying alias Eun Young 金 大 熙 jin da xi 炜 钿 xu wei dian alias Joe 李 锺 学 li zhong xue alias Jonathan 尹 憬 珍 yin jing zhen alias Kyung Jin 文宣基 wen xuan ji alias Moon Sun Ki 沙 朗 侬 sha lang yi alias Ray (Ragnhild) 黄善准 huang san zhun Sun Joon 左 野 贵 大 zuo ye gui da alias Takahiro 森 朝 美 sen chao mei alias Tomomi 清 水 qing shui alias Toshi 郭宇镕 guo yu rong alias WooYong
and of course not to forget the people I was allowed to meet in 方家村 [fang jia cun]: Fang Fei 方菲 and her boyfriend Jakob 亚克布, who is actually from the Southwest of Germany 西南德.
Finally I want to thank my boss 老板 from my internship 国华李 [guo hua li] who I met on November 9th 2007. I had the chance of learning so much about economics and business {not comparable at all with anything that any business administration course of any university could offer}, yet I still have and want to learn lots of things, because I think someone who thinks to be someone important and is satisfied with everything he or she has reached so far has stopped becoming someone...at least that is what a German idiom is about: Wer denkt jemand zu sein hat aufgehört jemand zu werden.
ありがとう, Cпасибо, Takk, 谢谢,Merci, ขอบคุณ, Shukriaa, 감사합니다, Cảm ơn Grazie, Best Regards Chris alias 肖克
195 days ago a plane from Beijing 北京 Peking landed in Munich 慕尼黑 München. I was back to Germany. My brother and his girlfriend picked me up at the airport and more things were to be experienced in Munich, Chemnitz, Cologne, Leverkusen, Dusseldorf and Berlin.
Some days were good, some days were not so good, but all in all I have to say that I am grateful for so many things and even more than thankful for the fact that I have been allowed to meet so many wonderful people in Beijing 北京 Peking and in Germany 德国 Deutschland.
Hereby I want to greet you my family members and my friends, maybe even the ones who do not like me (at all). That is why the blog entry is called:
"My Favorite Word 我最喜欢的字 [wo zui xihuan de zi] Mein Lieblingswort!":
Since I want to keep my way of writing, but still do not want to go on in such a brain-hemisphere and dendrit-harming confusing way, this blog entry will put my perception, time and space of some of the last 195 days in a comprehensive and meaningful coherence.
Before I start with this project, I need to make some advertisement for a guy who has just been on German TV. I would say he was the only Player of Bayern Munich's soccer team who did a good job. Well he used to be a soccer player.
I am talking again about the best soccer player ever. Mr. Mehmet Scholl was the expert in the TV-Studio of ARD {well the first German braoadcasting TV Channel} to comment on the rather bad tactics of Bayern Munich's team and the young Winners from Leverkusen. The result was 4:2.
When Mr. Scholl ended his career he actually wanted to keep distant from the media, however he has changed his opinion and is more present than I could have ever imagined.
This Friday {tomorrow: 2009-March-06} evening we can hear his voice at the Radio Station "Bayern II". At 11:05 pm / 23:05 he will be on air with "Mehmets Schollplatten" in the show "Nachtmix".
During this braodcasted program we will get to know which Music Mehmet Scholl enjoyed to listen to before and after soccer matches, when he was sad or when he was happy. But hey please listen yourself by clicking the Live Stream link at 23:05 Central European Time:
Hello / 你们好 [nǐ men hǎo] / Hallo!!! I would like to wish everybody, who is reading this blog a happy new year. I know it seems to be quite late, nevertheless I am still on time! I focused on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The new year just began today; on January 26th. It is the year of the Cow / Buffalo / Taurus. No matter how you call it in English the Chinese word is 牛 [niú].
Although the economy will have to face and already has been facing tremenduous problems and difficult changes there has been one good remarkable change as well; a big change in World Politics/Policies. Obama is the Man who is going to solve the problems {with regard to economy, and to war/peace} by his rhetorical excellent way of talking, his empathy and not to forget his knowlegde, not by bombardements and knowing more kinds of whisky than countries in the world! {guess who could be addressed}
May everything become better...and soon you will read more about my life and the translations into Chinese and German. A classmate told me that it is ahrd for her to follow since I am using three languages and my structure and metaphors I use are not always {well seldom} comprehensive, yet I want to show how English, Chinese and my mother {and not to forget also my father} tongue German shaped my life and the my way of thinking, writing and speaking.
I hope you will be able and interested to follow in spite of my tendency to mix up from time to time...well lets call that curiosity and mixture of languages a "Dechinglish".
My former handball-trainer Sven used to say the following: "Christian disappears faster than the light of a fridge when you close its door...& ... the way [he]shoots, well when he scores, [he] does it seldom enough then [he] scores in a physically impossible way... So far for the strangest exposition which has been published on this blog until now....
please let me explain, it is going to be a long explanation: In order to make it easier for Chinese people calling me, my former girlfriend 王梓 [Wang, Zi] 'baptized' me with the Chinese Name 肖克 [XiaoKe]. Well one day she just told me the following:
You know...'I like these Characters and they seem to be quite easy for you to write - well much easier than the actual translation/interpretation of your German/English 'Christian L.' name into Chinese.
Since then, whenever I introduced myself to Chinese people...they said:"hey I do not understand." Maybe your pronunciation is not correct. Well I have to confess that it has been very often the case that I was not understood by Chinese People...and it was my fault, because of my bad accent.
When I had a pen and some piece of paper I just wrote down the two easy characters. If not I tried to explain my name using terms and syllables which are more familiar to everybody.
When I wanted to explain my name I always tried to say something like that: Chinese 中文Chinesisch汉语:
When I wanted to explain my name I always tried to say something like that: Pinyin 拼音 Chinesische Lautschrift:
WoDe MingZi: DiYi Zi - WoDe Xing: XiaoXi De Xiao Wu Shui (WuTang De Wu) Nin MingBai Ma?
DiEr Zi - WoDe Ming: RuGuo Nin Zai ChaoShi. WuBai Ke De Ke. BiRu Shuo WuBai Ke PingGuo. XianZai Nin ZhiDao ZenMe Xie WoDe MingZi, Dui Bu Dui ?
English 英语 Englisch 英文: When I wanted to explain my name I always tried to say something like that: My Name: The First Character - My Surname: The first syllable of News {which means it is Xiao of XiaoXi) without water. {the water is included as a radical in the first character of XiaoXi - I usually call it the crooked I with the two dots above} (the chinese Wu from the term 'wutang' (which means 'without sugar')} Do you understand me - do you get me - is that evident enough - can you follow me?
The second Character - My first name: If you are in the super market - take the character for gram(m) from for example five hundred gramm (=Wu Bai Ke De Ke) For instance 500 gram(m) Apples. Now you know how to write my name, don't you?
Now let me tell you in which way my Chinese name is related to the way of disappearing.... The syllable 'Xiao' 消 of 'XiaoXi' means disappear (GerTRL: verschwinden) ...and well I do not know if or how 王梓 [Wang, Zi] could have had the chance of relating this to the first quotation (in the exposition) from my former handball coach, but somehow she found something matching. Anyway, I like that fact...
If that is not enough there is also a car - the Japanese Car - the "Nissan 'QashQai' " is translated to the Chinese People as 逍客 [Xiao Ke] which shares exactly the same pronunciation with my Chinese Name 肖克 [XiaoKe]. Both have the first {flat} tone and the fourth {falling} tone. Regarding that I am even closer to disappear quick and to do physically almost impossible things - which the QashQai - 逍客 shows in the following commercial Spot - that car and my name have a close connection, well soemhow maybe :-)
If you think the two Qs of the QashQai are not enough {I think so}I would like to add a story about the new James Bond Adventure "Quantum of Solace". Bond is hunting the guys who are responsible for the death of his love {well somehow she disappeared as well, unfortunately forever}. Somehow he gains some solace, some comfort, some consolidation... to be continued another day and in Another way to Die...(Alicia Keys & Jack White - Quantum of Solace official theme song)....
I did not lose someone, noone died (yet), but lately on friday october 31...again very bad news 消息 from the hospital of Eberswalde 埃伯斯瓦尔德的医院: I was there in the hospital...seeing my grandpa. I hope there is another way for him to die. And a different time for him to die. I hope he will become at least 80 years old. Still 8 months and 12 days.
My grandpa is so weak...his gallbladder/bile, his kidneys and his bronchi are working not well...he has been lying in bed in a single room for almost 3 weeks by now...and after the kidney operation he has not recovered yet...I can only pray and hope for some supernatural help - I hope there is a God who can give ear to my plea ...I count on all the saints (Today - November 1st is All Saints Day - A Catholic holiday in Germany) and the Reformation Day (regarding Luther - Ocotber 31st - not only Halloween)- I am a protestant, but not really religious...no matter which belief...i need to believe in the strength of my grandpa 'Werner Franke' 维尔纳·弗兰克 ... I discovered that when I talked or wrote about my problems, they were solved and I still believe in this principle...Right now I need the strongest believe...by writing here I expect to reach more people than ever...
During the time of Shakespeare I would have said: I must away - Ich muss weg - 我得走了 [Wo Dei Zou Le] !!! !!!!
Best Regards / 再见 Auf Wiedersehen / Mit freundlichen Grüßen Christian L. / 逍客 [Xiao Ke], sorry I mean 肖克 [Xiao Ke]
Post Scriptum 附言 [FuYan] & Preview 预告[YuGao]:
ASAP {as soon as possible}the funny yet economically serious sentences of Comedian Volker Pispers are going to be translated by me and a new topic will be discussed. I just give you some hints: KPMG & Hypo Real Estate - PWC & Sachsen LandesBank {TRL: The Bank of saxony}... And well 2008 "The Year of Mathematics/Arithmetics is going be celebrated at the Dies Academicus at the TU-Chemnitz...
I am trying to say it a bit like Karl Marx 卡尔·马克思 , but in a slightly different way: Financial Mathematicians/Academic and not Academic Economists please unite and associate !!!!.....
{that term Associate is used already by a big Finance, Consulting, Tax and Auditing Company whose name should not be mentioned by me anymore, because I have made too much advertisement for this Company yet. Associate is a beginner/rookie in that not again mentioned firm and is usually an Alumnus/Alumna with a bachelor degree }
....and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, you mathmaticians belong to such a wonderful "strange odd (+numbered) people/nation/group" (hereby I quote one of the smartest female financial mathematic experts of Germany)...PLEASE PLEASE find a solution for that crazy, damaged financial System - What about creating something new. Yesterday was Reformation Day...Learn a lesson from Martin Luther (maybe from the German and the American Martin Luther) !!! Change/Shape the world. At the beginning of the 16th century the contrahent of Martin Luther (the German one of course) was Thomas Müntzer respectively Thomas Münzer. Somehow this little wordplay works only in the German Language, because 'Münze' means coin (coin from money). The money has lost its glory and sooner or later it will have lost its value if there are people going on using and playing with Money and stocks/shares like James Bond in Casino Royale. {regarding and considering the recent extreme unusual upstick and downstick of "VolksWagen's" stock price}
I hope that I have reason to hope!!!
Obama for President, he seems to have a dream and he is and will be living the dream...Martin Luther King (so definitely the US-American one) would be proud of the Man who was raised by a Lady from Kansas and a Man from Kenya. Very Intercultural.
German德文Deutsch:
Finanzmathematiker/Wirtschaftswissenschaftler vereinigt euch and get associated.
{Associates - der Begriff wird schon durch ein sehr namhaftes weltbekanntes Finanzberatungs, Steuerberatungs und Wirtschaftsprüfungsunternehmen, welches hier aus rein rechtlichen und Schleichwerbungstechnischen Gründen leider von mir nicht mehr genannt werden sollte, denn der Name der Firma fiel in diesem merkwürdigen Blog schon zu oft. Associate bezeichnet einen Einsteiger bei der nicht schon wieder genannten Firma. Ein Associate hat füür gewöhnlich einen Bachelorabschluss.}
.... und BITTE BITTE BITTE, Ihr gehört doch zu solch einem Wunderbaren "Komischen Völkchen"(hiermit zitiere ich eine der wohl klügsten Finanzmathematikexpertinnen Deutschlands)...BITTE BITTE FINDET bitte eine Lösung für dieses verrueckte, angeknaxte Finanzsystem - macht doch mal was Neues. Gestern war Reformationstag...nehmt Euch ein Beispiel an Martin Luther!!! Veraendert die Welt. In den Anfängen des 16. Jahrhunderts hiess Luthers Gegenspieler lustiger- und pikanterweise Thomas Müntzer bzw. Thomas Münzer...{In Anspielung auf unser achso geliebtes Geld!!!} Das Geld hat seine Herrlichkeit/Pracht/Ehre verloren und früher oder später wird es seinen Wert verloren haben, falls es weiterhin Leute geben wird, die mit Geld und Aktienkurse so umgehen und damit spielen als wären sie James Bond in dem Film Casino Royale. {das Ganze in Anpielung auf den extrem ungewöhnlichen Verlauf der Volkswagen-Aktie in den letzten Tagen}
Ich hoffe, dass ich zu Recht hoffe !!!
Obama for President, he seems to have a dream and he is and will be living the dream...Martin Luther King (so definitely the US-American one) would be proud of the Man who was raised by a Lady from Kansas and a Man from Kenya. Very Intercultural.
